A Leisurely Journey on Lake Kerkini: How to Truly Experience This Place.
Lake Kerkini is often included in lists of the most beautiful natural attractions in Northern Greece. People traditionally come here to spend time away from the city, photograph a variety of birds, go boating, or take a jeep tour. However, Kerkini is increasingly becoming a destination for those who practice slow travel.
Slow travel is a form of travel that emerged as an alternative to the ever-accelerating pace of life, where even a vacation turns into a to-do list.
The essence of slow travel is quite simple: stop rushing and start listening more closely to yourself and your own desires, without following the region’s traditional tourist itinerary. Allow yourself to do nothing if you feel like it, or to walk a lot—but not for the sake of the number of kilometers covered, but to truly experience the place, its rhythm, sounds, and atmosphere.

Slow travel can take many forms. It can be a long journey, or it can be a short one. You could spend a few weeks by the lake and stay in one of the small villages along the shore to truly experience the local way of life. Or you can come for just one day and spend the morning watching pelicans and flamingos, have coffee at a small village café on the shore where locals go instead of tour groups, or take a leisurely stroll along the lake, observing how the color of the water changes and how the surrounding mountains look different throughout the day.
In any case, the point is to stay in one place longer, explore the surroundings, and not treat the region as just a stop on the itinerary that needs to be “checked off.”
Slow travel can be either carefully planned or completely spontaneous. In one case, you map out your route in advance; in the other, you let the place guide you, making decisions spontaneously as you go. Regardless of the approach, what matters most is focusing on the quality of your experience, rather than the quantity of what you see.

ABOUT ME

It all began when we moved to one of the villages located in the national park area, near Lake Kerkini. Life here moves at a completely different pace than in the city. Time isn’t broken down into separate intervals, but is perceived as a continuous flow, in which events aren’t distinguished as significant or secondary.
Here, every moment is unique because it is woven from the subtle shifts in light, the movement of the air, and the changing hues of the water’s surface.
The very same shore here is different every day.
Beauty here is everywhere: in the variety of forms, in the imperfection of lines, in the constant change of the landscape.
Life in such an environment ceases to be a sequence of events. It becomes a continuous presence, where the outcome of an action is irrelevant, but rather the very process of experiencing each moment.
We live and create in this place because we cannot remain indifferent to its beauty.
Our artistic creation is rooted in the direct experience of the natural environment of Lake Kerkini. We combine visual arts with handicrafts (production of natural fragrances, candles, etc.).
Life by the lake gradually changes our perception. Here it becomes clear that humans are not separate from nature and do not control it. We are simply one of the forms of its presence.
That is why we do not simply seek to make nature the subject of our creation, but, through creation, to understand it more deeply and cultivate a different relationship with it, perceiving it as an autonomous living system that exists independently and beyond human interpretations.
We create our works by striving to express the experience of our deep connection with nature, as we perceive it, and in this way to contribute to the development of a more mindful approach to the natural world and a deeper, more attentive attitude toward it.
